Donna Haraway. Laureate Erasmus Prize 2025
Donna Haraway has been awarded the 2025 Erasmus Prize. In her moving acceptance speech, she honored the vital decolonial work of the journal Tapuya and her late colleague Sandra Harding. Haraway calls us to “relearn how to think with each other.”

Enrique Soto-Astorga (PhilComp)
The 2025 International Conference on Philosophy of Computing was held at Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM) last October. Enrique Soto-Astorga (Faculty of Sciences, UNAM) was one of the main organizers of the conference, along with the Research Group on Philosophy of Computing (UNAM/ACOM). He offers a broad view of the wide range of topics covered, from theory to the societal impact of computer machinery and new technologies, and invites the Tapuya and STS communities to visit philcomp.org to learn more about their work.

HST Section Awards 2025 Graduate Essay Prize
The Health, Science & Technology (HST) Section of LASA has awarded its 2025 Graduate Student Essay Prize to Hisrael Passarelli (Cedeplar/UFMG, Brazil) for his research “The impact of loneliness on health outcomes among Brazilian adults.” The prize recognizes outstanding interdisciplinary work on health, science, and technology in Latin America’s sociopolitical contexts. Congratulations to Hisrael and listen to what he has to say to Tapuya!
In this video, Paola Sesia (CIESAS) shares about winning the 2025 LASA Health, Science, and Technology Article Prize for her work with Lina Berrio Palomo on Indigenous midwifery and alternative care during Covid-19 in Southern Mexico. Sandra Harding (1935–2025)
understood the need to question whose perspectives have shaped Western science, philosophy, and social studies of science. She also recognized the urgency of amplifying STS scholars from the Global South. That’s why, in 2016, she conspired with Latin American scholars to create Tapuya.
This journal exists because of her tenacity and vision. She will be deeply missed and remembered.

Teresa Guadalupe de León Escobedo has won First Place in her category of the PINCC 2024 Climate Change Research Award for her article “Scalar dissonances, knowledge-making, sense of urgency, and social narratives about the future. Contours of the climate change debate in Latin America”, published in Tapuya Volume 6. In her article, Teresa Guadalupe de León Escobedo examines climate change through global-local knowledge dissonances in Latin America and reveals unresolved tensions between global narratives and the realities of the Global South. EASST-4S 2024 Program is now available!
The 2024 quadrennial joint meeting of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) and the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) explores STS contributions to transformations in an era of grand societal challenges. The EASST-4S 2024 Amsterdam conference will be a face-to-face (f2f) event with a program running for four full days, 16-19 July 2024 at the Athena Institute at VU Amsterdam.

Interview with Kelly S. McDonough
In this interview by the University of Arizona Press, Kelly S. McDonough shares her process of writing the book Indigenous Science and Technology. Nahuas and the World Around Them, emphasizing collaboration with scholars and long conversations with Nahua friends. She created multimedia diagrams to understand Nahua science, tech, and theories, aiming to challenge mainstream narratives that exclude Indigenous contributions.

In a recent newsletter from UCLA, founding editor Leandro Rodríguez Medina reflects on the milestones and challenges faced by Tapuya: Latin American Science, Technology, and Society. Since its launch in 2018, Tapuya has revolutionized the publishing landscape, earning the 2023 Infrastructure Award from the Society for Social Studies of Science. With a commitment to accessibility and collaboration, the journal has increased engagement, reaching over 100,000 downloads in 2023, and continues to build bridges between epistemic communities across the globe.

XV Jornadas Latinoamericanas de Estudios Sociales de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (XV Jornadas ESOCITE LA) is the place to discuss cutting-edge topics in STS, with an emphasis on the Latin American context.

The Bioanthropological Latin American Network (BLAN) / Red BALANCE is a new project funded by the Global Initiatives Grant, and supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation.
The main objectives of this network are protecting regional biocultural heritage by establishing and advocating for ethical practices to promote more equitable collaborations between Latin American and Global North researchers, and strengthening bioanthropological research in the Global South by empowering members of the local scientific community. The project, which has been consolidating since 2022, had its official founding ceremony in July.

FULLY FUNDED PHD POSITION IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION STUDIES at INGENIO (CSIC-UPV).
INGENIO (CSIC-UPV) is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD scholarship as part of the research project: ‘Health crisis and academic engagement with society (HECAES)’, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. The primary focus of HECAES is to increase understanding about the links between a health crisis and academic engagement. The ultimate goal of this scholarship is to support the successful completion of a PhD thesis aligned with the project’s objectives.

SHOT Global Community Scholars
DEADLINE EXTENDED
Each year, SHOT designates selected Global Community Scholars for a two-year term. These scholars act as ambassadors for the society in their countries and regions, both by informing SHOT about the history of technology in their regions, and by helping to disseminate information about the society and its activities. In return, they receive priority for travel grant applications and a free two-year SHOT membership, which includes a subscription to Technology and Culture.
The new deadline to receive applications is Tuesday, 10 October 2023.

Trans-hemispheric Seminar
Co-sponsored by the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), Drexel University, and the University of Toronto, this seminar brought together 11 early career scholars from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, India, Mexico, Namibia, Nigeria, Portugal, and the US for an immersive four-day trans-hemispheric conversation on race and the history of technology. Together with professors Edward Jones-Imhotep (University of Toronto), Projit Mukharji (Ashoka University), and Rosanna Dent (Rutgers), the editors of H+T (Tiago Saraiva and Amy Slaton) and Tapuya (Vivette Garcia Deister) facilitated diverse-format activities in the seminar room of the Department of History at Drexel University, in Philadelphia. Outside the room and about the city, Jason Ludwig (PhD Candidate, Cornell University) guided the group to the site of the Archeology West heritage project, and we learned about the oldest LGBTQ+ library and archive in the US from John Anderies, Director of the J. Wilcox Jr. Archives collections of the William Way Community Center. A visit to the Making Worlds Bookstore and Community Center and a writing-exercise at the Merion Botanical Park were also on the schedule. As a result of this seminar, we are working with participants to generate a special issue to be published jointly by History and Technology and Tapuya: Latin American Science, Technology and Society (Taylor&Francis).

Monday 31st of July, Tapuya‘s Editor-in-Chief participated in the roundtable “Publishing in English: Challenges and realities from the perspective of the journal editors”, organized by National School of Languages, Linguistics and Translation (ENALLT), UNAM. In this session, Olga Sergienko (Journal of Geophysical Research) and Vivette García Deister (Tapuya: Latin American Science, Technology and Society) shared their insights as editors, addressed language-related challenges, and offered advice to aspiring authors.

On July 26, Tapuya was invited to participate in the “VIII Escuela Doctoral ESOCITE”, Uruguay. Along with other ESOCITE affiliated journals –such as ESTS and Redes–, Tapuya presented its editorial project and policies, as well as an explanation of the publication process, with special emphasis on PhD students as prospective authors.
El miércoles 26 de julio, Tapuya fue invitada a participar en la “VIII Escuela Doctoral ESOCITE”, en Uruguay. This special session is an invitation to scholars of all stages (but especially grad students, junior scholars, and those from underrepresented communities/regions) to meet the editors of ISH-related journals. The Forum for Science and Knowledge in Latin America and the Caribbean (SKLAC), of the History of Science Society announced the first SKLAC article prize. The SKLAC article prize will be awarded biennially to the article in English, Spanish, or Portuguese judged to make the most significant contribution to the history of science, knowledge, and medicine in Latin America and the Caribbean.
